- Usage of over-the-counter pain relievers and/or prescription pain relievers- such as acetaminophen, aspirin, or NSAIDs and Tramadol. (such as ibuprofen [Advil, Motrin], ketoprofen, or naproxen [Aleve]). ( I give these treatment options a C grade, because NSAIDs are highly unfit for prolonged usage due to their many side-effects and the fact that kids under the age of 18 years or younger shouldn’t take them because it increase their risk for Reye’s syndrome.
- Epidural steroid injections – are also used for reducing inflammation. Epidural steroid injections are very effective as they deliver local anti-inflammatory agents directly into the affected area.
Research suggests these injections have a modest effect when irritation is caused by pressure from a herniated, or ruptured, disc.
( Although effective for pain relief, steroid injections can cause serious side effects, so, I would venture to give this a C grade). - Prescription muscle relaxants – to ease muscle spasms, such as flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine}( although these help, they’re not without their side effects also, so I would give this a C grade).

The most efficacious antidepressants for the treatment of neuropathic pain appear to be the tertiary-amine TCAs (amitriptyline, doxepin, imipramine), venlafaxine, bupropion, and duloxetine. These appear to be closely followed in efficacy by the secondary-amine TCAs (desipramine, nortriptyline).
